The Common Raven is all black, and very similar in appearance to the American Crow. The Raven is, however, larger, with a heavier bill and wedge-shaped tail. The similarity between birds stops with their appearance. The Raven is very comfortable in the air, often seen soaring high in the sky, and may even be viewed performing acrobatics for fun. Playing with one another, even briefly flying upside down are not unknown for the Raven.
The Raven is a permanent Algonquin Highland species, remaining in the area through all seasons. Unlike many birds, they will mate during winter, finishing nesting as many birds are just returning to the area. Nests consist of a large mass of sticks, lined with fur, moss, and lichens, and placed on rocky cliff ledges or high up in tall trees. The Raven will lay 4 to 7 dull green eggs, each spotted with brown.
Ravens are primarily scavengers, basing their diets on carrion found over miles of wilderness. Vocal birds, the Raven moans and croaks, along with many other sounds, such as barks, yells, and gurgles. They even produce rather beautiful bell-like notes. Found throughout the Algonquin Highlands, the Raven exists even in very remote areas.
